When releasing a product, are you Apple or Android?

Fantastic history-of-the-smartphone article from AppleInsider. When you release a product or start a business, are you releasing something that is excellent from the get-go, or in need of immediate upgrade and evolution? I know I'd rather under-sell and over-achieve than over-sell and under-achieve......
